OHBO – One Hand Bottle Opener

OHBO is a cheap tool, designed to be 3D printed, that lets you open a water bottle with one hand. This project was my entry for the Hackaday Prize Assistive Technologies category.

Every story has a beginning.

I needed to open a water bottle, but I didn’t have both hands free. What I did have was a 3D printer, a Prusa i3.

After a few quick sketches, I designed a prototype, printed it… and it didn’t work. So I tried again, and OHBO was born.

From that point on the idea has been to make it simpler, cheaper, nicer and better.

With that I published version 0.1.

The .stl files are available on GitHub at this link (version 0.1).

Parts needed:

  • 1 M3x4mm screw (allen head preferred)
  • 1 M5x20mm screw (allen head preferred)
  • 1 M3 nut
  • 1 M5 nut

[Update (2016-09-04)]

Version 0.2 is out today, with several improvements. The ring design has been refined, and the handle design has been improved to remove the screw.

A bottle-cap opener has also been included as a beta, using a 5-cent euro coin inserted into the side.

I’ve also added an image with all the versions developed so far.

Also part of BricoLabs , an A Coruña hackerspace/makerspace where a bunch of CAD, electronics and 3D-printing enthusiasts meet weekly at the Domus.
